Soma - The Moon

Dhadhi sanka Thushaaraabham
Ksheero Dhaarnava Sambhavam
Namaami sasinam Somam

The one who has the hue of curd and icebergs, one who emerges from the milky ocean, Chandra who adorns Shiva, I prostrate. that Chandra.

Chandra Bhagavan

Soma is a lovable God - a loving god. Pleasing to children as well as elders universally appealing to everyone whatever may be the religion of the onlooker. Sages and devotees invoke the Goddess Mother in Chandra and meditate for hours.

The Moon's day is Monday. Worshipping Chandra on Mondays is said to be very effective in getting one's prayers answered.

The Moon is a karaka of many things. He is an indicator of the mother, and females in general, the public, general well-being and happiness, femininity and beauty, the eyesight, memory and the mind.

The Sun is the indicator of the soul, and the Moon is the vehicle of the mind that receives the light of the soul. Mercury is the further process that is called the intellect, which places a value on what the mind has received. The Moon as the mind is indicative of all the senses and their ability to perceive life in its entire splendor. Mercury represents a further distillation and conceptualization of that process and its ultimate intellectualization in forming judgment. The Moon is most comfortable and powerful in the 4th House; she also likes the angles. The Moon is particularly beneficial for the water sign ascendants of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Her nature is KAPHA, or watery. Her gem is the Moonstone and Natural Pearls. Her metal is silver and her direction is Northwest.

The bright Moon is considered a benefic of the highest order, and the dark Moon is considered a malefic. The Moon is known as a hare, or rabbit in Vedic lore, as he jumps faster than any of the other grahas. The Moon rules over the sidereal sign of Cancer. He is exalted in Taurus, and fallen in the opposite sign of Scorpio.

Mental retardation, skin and nerve problems, jaundice, fluid accumalation, the diseases and dosham to mother are caused because of Malefic Chandran. By praying to Lord Chandran, the above afflictions can be overcome. Wealth, mother's/wife's happiness, Govt's help, ownership of vehicle, marriage, offsprings, prosperity, foreign travel will be bestowed on his devotees.

The presiding deity are Kailasanathar and his consort Periyanayakiamman. Chandran is the ruling planet of Karkataka and he faces the South-East direction. The Adi Devatha is water; prathyathi Devatha is Gowri; his colour is white and his vahana is white horse. The grain associated with him is paddy, rice; the folwer - white arali; fabric - white cloth; gem - pearl; food - curd rice.

MOON: The Moon in Vedic astrology is called Chandra. Chandra means "bright and shining" in Sanskrit. The Moon is also called Soma, named after the intoxicating sacred drink used in Vedic sacrifice. Where all westerners know their Sun-sign, you will find all Hindus know their Moon sign, for the Moon, and its birth sign are all important in Hindu culture and astrology.

In fact, Hindus do not celebrate their birthday on the calendar day on which they were born. Instead, they celebrate their birthday in the month they were born when the Moon enters the part of the sign it was in at birth. Such is the importance of the Moon in Vedic culture! The bright Moon is considered a benefic of the highest order, and the dark Moon is considered a malefic. The Moon rules over the sidereal sign of Cancer. He is exalted in Taurus, and fallen in the opposite sign of Scorpio. The Moon is a karaka of many things. He is an indicator of the mother, and females in general, the public, general well being and happiness, femininity and beauty, the eyesight, memory and the mind. Kindly note that the Moon is indicative of the mind, and not Mercury. The Sun is the indicator of the soul, and the Moon is the vehicle of the mind that receives the light of the soul.

Mercury is the further process that is called the intellect, which places a value on what the mind has received. The Moon as the mind is indicative of all the senses and their ability to perceive life in all its splendours. Mercury represents a further distillation and conceptualisations of that process and its ultimate intellectualizations in forming judgment. She has auspicious looks and sweet speech, is fickle minded and very lustful." The Moon is most comfortable and powerful in the 4th House; she also likes the angles. The Moon is particularly beneficial for the water sign Ascendants of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Her nature is kapha, or watery. Her gem is the Moonstone and Natural Pearls. Her metal is silver and her direction is Northwest. The Moon's day is Monday. The Moon comes into her full maturity at age 24.

Afflictions to the Moon show personality disorders, difficulties in relating to other people and emotional disturbances. A strong Moon, on the other hand, shows sensitivity, receptivity, caring for others and a nurturing attitude in life. It gives emotional maturity, responsibility and the capacity to have a beneficial effect upon society. Rahu can cause us to lose thinking power over our mind.

A benefice Moon is often found in the charts of doctors, healers or psychologists, as well as good mothers and wives. A strong Moon can give power like the Sun. A strong Moon can outshine the other planets, sometimes even the Sun. Whereas the Sun creates the king or strong willed leader, the Moon creates a good administrator or a leader open to the needs of his people. The Moon indicates relationship, interchange, and communication.

THE SADHANA OF THE MOON

The greatest significance of the planet Moon lies in the fact it controls the five Subtle and five gross senses that run human life. All the senses are controlled by the mind and the ruler of the mind is the moon. In the month of Sharaad on a full moon night even today people place kheer (sweet porridge of rice milk and dry fruits) in the Moon light and along with it they carry some special Sadhana which aims at attainment of perfect health, through out the year ahead. This is also done to cure asthma. If it is Monday on Shivratri or when the moon is positioned in Taurus then Moon is said to be most beneficial. During such  time the person should go in for Sadhana to make the moon more favourable to him.

ADVANTAGE OF SADHANA OF THE MOON

1. For improving one's eyesight and imparting a glow to one's face this Sadhana should be tried.

2. Being the ruling planet of the mind its sadhana proves of great help to those engaged in research on new subjects involving a lot of planning and original thoughts.

3. Beauty, attraction and motherly feelings in a woman are also ruled by the moon. Wearing a pearl too has the same effect.

4. For success in trade in food related to sweets, juices, farming this can be helpful. This sadhana can also also help  in malefic effects of the planets like Sun and Mars onto the moon in one's chart.

5. For success in politics, social work or law one needs sharp brains and very high analytical powers. This can be gained through the powers of the moon.

6 The basis of nature is reproduction and family life and stability and true love in the family, can only be had through a favourable moon.

THE SADHANA

This sadhana should be started from any Monday of the bright fortnight. For complete success It is better to have a Shivling and a picture of Lord Shiva in the worship place.

At night sit facing North west on a mat. First pray to the Guru and Lord Shiva with chanting:

Praatah Smaraami Bhavbheetihar Suresham, Gangaadharam Vrishabh Vaahanamambikesham Khatvaang Shool Vardaabhay Hastmeesham, Sansaar Rog Harmoushadam - Adwiteeyam

After placing the Yantra chant the following mantra:

Aum Aashyaayassame Tute Vishvatah Som Vrishnnayam Bhavaajasyasantrathe.

Next chanting the Chandra Gayatri Mantra 11 times and make 11 marks with vermilion on the Yantra:

Aum Sheer Putraay Vidmahe Amrit Tatvaay Dheemahi Tanno Chandra Prachodayat.

JAPA MANTRA:  Japa (repetition) of the mantra of any planet should be completed within the ascending cycle of the Moon and should be repeated the prescribed number of times, which is 18 malas of the mantra:

Aum Shraam Shreem Shroum Sah Chandraay Namah.

After the Mantra recital read the following Strotra written by Sage Gautama.

SHREE CHANDRAASHTAAVINSHATI NAAMAH STOTRA

LUNAR YANTRA: This is the lunar yantra based on the number two. As one is increased to two for this yantra, so are all the other numbers increased by one. Now everything adds up to 18, which is the number that completes the lunar manifestation. The total of all the number in the lunar yantra is 54.

WEAK PERIODS:  December, January and February are the months when someone's Moon in the birth chart is affected.  The person will suffer from psychological problems.  They should prepare themselves to face hardship during these months.

STRONG PERIODS:  The period between June 20th and July 27th called "The House of the Moon" is the most beneficial time.  During this period they should devote their energy in promoting their business.  This is a suitable time for all sorts of auspicious activities, traveling, and planning for the future.

They should not make important decisions when (1) the Moon is full (2) the Moon's rising time is close to the rising time of the Sun (the last 3 days of the descending Moon cycle - Krishna paksha of the Moon). Or (3) when the person is near a lake, river or an ocean.  Decisions are best made midway through the descending or ascending cycle of the Moon.  During these times the Moon is not powerful.  They should take up sports and hobbies that involve them in outdoor activities.  They should be forced to exercise to keep their psyche in proper shape.

FAVOURABLE COLOURS:  White, light green, blue, cream and grape colours are helpful.  Light green is good for the mental power.  The grape colour soothes the nervous system.

DEITY:  The main deity is Shiva.  He is sitting on a tiger's skin in the lotus posture, holding a trident in his left hand and conferring blessings with his right hand.  A stream of water is coming out from his matted locks.  Shiva is smiling and looking with love through his open eyes.  (CHANDRASHEKHAR Shiva Roop)

HEALTH AND FASTING:  Stress and strain can trouble their nervous system.  Heart disease.  They are emotional and sensitive by nature, they love their family life and often get into emotional conflicts.  They should avoid anger, which burns the life-giving fluids, since physically they are not strong.  A fit of anger can cause hysteria and lead them into an unconscious state.  They should wear Rudraksha beads and drink water from a silver glass. They should observe silence (Mouna) and sleep on a full moon night and full moon day, which will be very helpful to them.  (Meditate).

Weak digestion systems.  They are prone to indigestion, constipation, lack of appetite and intestinal and gas troubles.

FASTING:  On Mondays they should fast and after sunset they should avoid salt, spices, grains, pulses, or any solid foods.  If necessary they can use a purifying tea from herbs (mint, dandelion, fenugreek) or drink fresh fruit juices (canned or bottled juices should not be used).  They can also fast on buttermilk or water with half a lemon squeezed into each glass.  Fasting on full moon days, as mentioned above, is very beneficial for their psyche.  If possible they should go to Shiva temple and offer milk mixed with sugar and offer it on the Shivalinga on Mondays.

MEDITATION:  Meditate on Lord Shiva as mentioned above.  If it is not possible then they can meditate on a pearl, crystal, moonstone or quartz.

METAL: THIS SHOULD BE OF SILVER

DHYANAM: Dadhi sankha tusarapham ksirodarnava samphavam
namami sasinam somam samphor makuta bhusanam

MOOL MANTRA: Aum srim krim ham ram sam candraya namah

GAYATRI: Aum Sheer Putraay Vidmahe Amrit Tatvaay Dheemahi Tanno Chandra Prachodayat.

PLANT SAMIT: JACKTREE

The Moon And The Astronomy

Moons are natural satellites that orbit planets. There are at least 61 moons in our solar system. Earth and Pluto each have one moon. Most moons are much smaller than the planets they orbit. Charon, however, which orbits Pluto, is about half its size. The Earth's moon is quite large compared to the size of the Earth, also. Since Earth's and Pluto's moons are so large compared to the planets they orbit, some scientists even call them double planets.

Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune each have more than one moon. Mars has two known moons, Jupiter has 16 known moons, Uranus has15 known moons, and Neptune has eight known moons. Saturn has the most known moons with at least 18.

Saturn's largest moon is Titan. Titan has an atmosphere made up mostly of nitrogen, like the Earth's atmosphere. Some scientists believe that Titan's atmosphere is very similar to that on the Earth four billion years ago. Neptune's moon Triton has a surface temperature of -235 degrees centigrade making it the coldest body explored in the solar system.

Moons are called natural satellites. Moons are much smaller than their planets and orbit them. If an asteroid falls into orbit around a planet, it is called a moon. Most moons orbit their planets from west to east, which is the same direction that their planets orbit the sun. There are a few moons that orbit their planets from east to west. The moons going in an opposite direction are believed to have been captured by their planet's gravitational fields some time after the formation of the solar system. Mercury and Venus are the only planets that do not have any moons

The Moon is Earth's nearest neighbor in space. The average distance between the Moon and our planet is about 239,000 miles (382,000 km). It takes about six days to travel from the Earth to its only natural satellite. The Moon is approximately 2,160 miles (3,460 km) in diameter. It is about 1/4 the size of our planet and about 81 times less massive. In fact, if seen next to the Earth, the Moon would look like a tennis ball next to a basketball.

Because the Moon is Earth's nearest neighbor, it was the first space object ever visited by humans. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to step on the Moon's surface. The Eagle was the first manned spacecraft to land on the Moon. The oldest Moon rock found by astronauts is 4 1/2 billion years old.

The Moon is the brightest object in the night sky. However, it does not make any light of its own. The Moon shines due to light from the Sun reflecting off it. Even thought the Moon appears to be different sizes on different nights, its size does not change. When you see different sized Moons what you are really seeing is different parts of it being lit by sunlight on different nights.

Even though the Moon is only 1/4 the size of the Earth, the Moon is the sixth largest of the known moons in our solar system. When compared to the size of its planet, it is the second largest moon. Only Charon, a moon of Pluto, is larger when compared to the size of its planet.

The Moon's gravitational pull is only 1/6 that of the Earth. That's why the Apollo astronauts could leap so high on the Moon. However, because it is so close to our planet, it is mostly the Moon's gravitational force that causes a rise in the ocean tides on Earth. The Moon rotates around the Earth every 27 1/3 days.

There isn't any life on the Moon. This is because the Moon has no air, wind, or water. The Moon has no significant atmosphere. Because of this, its temperature varies from 230 F during the day to -230 F during the night. The great variation in temperature is due to the fact that, without a significant atmosphere, there is nothing to block heat or hold it on the Moon's surface.

Not all astronomers agree on how the Moon was created. However, most scientists believe the Moon was created when an object about the size of Mars collided with the Earth billions of years ago. They believe the collision created many fragments in the Earth's orbit. Scientists think the fragments later combined to form our Moon.
