Guru- The Jupiter

The planet Jupiter in Vedic astrology is known as GURU, BRIHASPATI, and DEVAGURA. In Sanskrit these names mean, "teacher, lord of light, and teacher to the gods."

Jupiter is a benefice planet, generally considered to be the most auspicious of the planets. He rules over the two sidereal signs of Sagittarius and Pisces. He is exalted in the sign of Cancer and fallen in the opposite sign of Capricorn. Where the Sun is known as Atman, or the soul, Jupiter is known as JIVA, the consciousness of the soul representing the individuality of self.

Jupiter's epithets are sacred and many: "Lord of sacred speech", "Lord of power", "Guru of the Gods", "reader of minds" and "beloved by the Gods".

Jupiter is a karaka or indicator of fortune, wealth, fame, luck, devotion and faith, spirituality, charity, morality, meditation, mantra, children, magistrates, ministers, lawyers and leaders in government and religion. Jupiter represents sacred scripture, wisdom, benevolence and philosophy. Jupiter's most favored position is in the first. He does well both in the Kendra's and Angles, and the auspicious Trikonal Houses. His nature is KAPHA, or watery. His gemstone is Yellow Sapphire or Yellow Topaz and his metal is Gold. Jupiter's direction is Northeast and his day is Thursday. As a benefice planet he reaches full maturity the earliest of the 9 grahas at age 16.

Worship of BRIHASPATI or GURU (JUPITER) Devata results in a cure from ailments affecting the stomach and helps one to ward off his/her sins, helps him/her in gaining strength, valor, longevity etc. He grants the boon of father-hood to the childless, good education (Vidya). He is revered as the Guru of Devas, protector of the world and is considered SRESHTA (matchless) among the wise. Kind-hearted he is considered the Loka Guru and dispenser of justice and can be known only by a proper study of the Vedas. Thursdays are considered to be the best day for the worship of Jupiter.

Fame, wealth, siblings are the beneficial aspects of Guru. His wives are Tharai, Sangini. The presiding deities are Kasi Aaranyeswarar and his consort Elavarkuzhali. Guru is the Lord of Dhanusu and Meena Rasi and he faces North direction. The Adi Devatha is Brahma and the Prathyathi Devatha is Indran. His colour is yellow and his vahana is elephant. The grain assciated with him is kadalai; the flower - white mullai; fabric - yellow cloth; gem - pushparagam(white topaz); food - rice mixed with bengal gram dhal powder.

In Vedic myths Jupiter, or Brihaspati, is the 7th son of the sage Angra. He is often depicted as middle age in yellow garments, rather large with the temperament of a priest. Indra sent a message to the Moon, but Chandra would not give up Tara. So Indra ordered the devas to fight with the Moon for the return of Tara. After years of fighting the supreme God Brahma ordered the Moon to return Tara. Tara returned and a son was soon born to Brihaspati, but the son, Mercury, really was the son of the Moon. The supreme god Brahma again returned, as the war was about to resume and asked Tara whose child it was. She replied the father was the Moon and Brahma returned the child to the Moon, his father. That Brihaspati would accept Tara back after an illicit pregnancy, and return the illicit child to his father, instead of pretending the child was his own, shows the great magnanimity and generosity of the great planet Jupiter!

JUPITER is well known as the most helpful, generous and beneficent of the planets. This planet rules religion and philosophy. He is a spiritual and ethical (sattvic) planet.

As Mercury tends to show our outer career in life, how we relate to society on a practical level, Jupiter indicates our inner career, where we really find our personal fulfilmentand what we enjoy doing most.

Jupiter is the planet of luck, grace, favour, and fortune. He gives wealth, prosperity and success. Those who win at races or lotteries or have great inheritances usually have a well-placed Jupiter. One may suffer from unexpected bad luck, bad karma, trouble with authorities and institutions or loss in litigation when weak.

HEALTH AND DISEASES:  Frail nerves.  According to Ayurveda, the nervous system is related to the humour of wind, the air element.  Nerve function is related to the principle of activity and movement; the humour of wind is the only active principle out of the 3 body humors (bile and mucus are immobile). 

SKIN PROBLEMS:  As a result of disturbance in the humor of wind (Vayu), the body feels dry.  The use of garlic, ginger, asafoetida, fenugreek seeds in food and the avoidance of indigestion, acidity and constipation can help calm the aggravated humor of the wind.  The use of gram flour (chickpea flour) in bread and the ingestion of carrots or carrot juice can help cure skin diseases. (Vitamin A). 

WORRYING AND UNEASINESS OF MIND:   Meditation, deep and slow breathing exercises, morning and evening walks along the side of a flowing river, reading scriptures, chanting the mantras, and singing of hymns, bajans, can help.

INCREASE OF SEXUAL URGES:  By maintaining a healthy diet (not too oily or greasy ), by regular of use of mashed dates that has been boiled and topped with pinch of saffron) 

ARTHRITIS: This is anther disease created by aggravated humor of wind. And maintaining gas free diet, and during winter season, they should with take lot of honey.

IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD: Fasting on herbal teas and blood purifying fruit juices can help this problem. A change diet to vegetarianism, use of alkaline foods, use of sprouts, regular morning walks, breathing exercises, and meditation can also cure impurities of the blood.

HEART TROUBLES: Wearing Rudraksha beads  in the form of necklace or arm band can help the heart. Also eating rose petal jam (known as Gulkand). Avoiding fats and hot spicy foods can help the heart.

WEAK PERIODS:  The months of October and November are not favourable.  During this period, they should avoid starting new projects or undertaking long journeys.  

STRONG PERIODS:  The periods between February 19th and March 20th, and between November 21st and December 20th are the most favourable.  All new projects should be started during these times.  Travel during these periods brings long and lasting benefits.

FAVOURABLE COLOURS:  Yellow is the most favourable colour. In their environments, work and relaxation, they should use yellow colour around them.  This will be very helpful in removing stress.  They can also use pink, blue or light purple.  

PRECIOUS STONES.  Yellow sapphire and yellow topaz are the main gems.

FASTING & DEITY:  They should worship Lord Vishnu. On Thursdays they should fast, offer homage to Jupiter, avoid eating bananas. On the full moon days they can also fast and observe a vow of silence and at night rather than sleep  they should chant mantras and meditate, they can receive great help during this 24 hours. Hindus can recite Vishnu's Mantra and Vishnu Saharsranam chant. To follow this practices on every full moon day, full moon brings good luck and satisfaction of all desires. Hindus can also combine this with worship of Satyanarayan and listen to the Katha of Shri Satyanayaran.     

MANTRA JAPA:  Japa repetition of the mantra of any planet should be completed within the ascending cycle of the Moon and should be repeated 19,000 times.

JUPITER YANTRA: This yantra for Jupiter is based on the number five. The numbers add up to 27 for each column and 81 for the total.

METAL: GOLD OR COPPER

Sadhana of Jupiter This sadhana can be started from any Thursday. Sit on a yellow matt facing NorthEast and wearing yellow clothes. On a mound of rice dyed yellow, place the Brihaspati Yantra on them. Use yellow flowers in this puja. Then chanting the following Mantra:

Aum Brihaspate Atyudaryo Arhaad Dhyurhaad Dhyumad Vibhaati Kratumaj- janeshu. Yadeedyachn Sa Rit Prajaatastadasmaasu Dravinnam Dhyehi Dhitram.

Light incense and a ghee lamp and joining both palms chant thus.

Aum Devamantri Vishaalashah Yadd Lokaahite Ratah. Anek Shishya Sampoornnah Peedaam Dahate Me Guruh.

Raise both hands and pray to Jupiter to present itself in the yantra.

Aum Aangirasaay Vidmahe Divya Dehaay Dheemahi Tanno Jeevah Prachodayaat.

Take yellow flowers in your hand and offer them on the Yantra chanting thus for success in the Sadhana.

DHYANAM: Hreem Devaanaam Cha Rishinnaam Cha Guru Kaanchan Sannibham. Buddhi Bhootam Trilokesham Tam Namaami Brihaspatim. Aum Brim Brishaspataye Namah.

Take rice grains dyed yellow in left hand and with right offer them on yantra chanting.

Aum Suraachaaryaay Namah. Aum Gurunaam Gurave Namah. Aum Vaachaspataye Namah. Aum Chit Shuddhi Karaay Namah. Aum Dharma Roopaay Namah. Aum Sur Kaarvya Kritodhyamaay Namah. Aum Dev Poojitaay Namah. Aum Sarva Vedaantvide Namah. Aum Sarvagyaay Namah. Aum Brahmavidya Vishaaradaay Namah. aum Satya Bhaashannaay Namah. Aum Brihastpataye Namah.

Thereafter with rosary chant 12 rounds of the Mantra daily for 7 days.

MOOL MANTRA: Aum Hreem Kleem Hoom Brihaspataye Namah

GAYATRI MANTRA: AUM GURU DEVAYA VIDMAHE PARABRAHMANE DHEEMAHI, TANNO GURUH PRACHODAYAT.

AUM Suraachaarya Vidmahe, Surasreshtaya dhimahi, tanno guruh prachodayat.

Brihaspati-rbrispatir-jeevah suraachaaryo Vindaavarah. Vaagisho Dhishnno Deerghashmashru Peetaambro Yuvaa. 1.

Sudhaa Drishti-rgrahaadheesho Grah Peedaapahaarakah. Dayaakarah Soumya Moortim Surarchayah Kumkum Dhyutih. 2.

Lok Poojyo Lokabrihaspati-rneetigyo Neeti Kaarakah. Taaraapati cha Angiraso Ved Veidya Pitaamah. 3.

Bhaktyaa Brihaspati Smritvaa Naamaanye Taani Yah Patthet. Arogi Balvaan Shreemaan Putravaan Sa Bhavennarah. 4.

Jeevedwarsh Shatam Martyah Paapam Nashyati Nashyati. Yah Poojyed Brihaspatim Dine Peet Gandhaakshataambareih. 5.

Pushpa Deep Uphaareishcha poojyitvaa Brihaspatim. Braahmannaan Bhojayitvaa Cha Peedaa Shaantir-bhaved Guroh. 6.

On 12th day make 108 oblations in the holy fire chanting above Mantra each time having suffixed it with Swaha. Offer prayers to the Guru.

The Jupiter And The Astronomy

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It is the largest planet in our solar system. In fact, it is larger than all of the other planets combined. Jupiter is 1,400 times larger than Earth. It is the most massive planet; its mass is 318 times greater than the Earth's, its diameter is more than 11 times greater than the Earth's, and its volume is 1,400 times greater than the Earth's. Despite all of this, Jupiter is only one-fourth as dense as the Earth. Jupiter was named after the ruler of the gods in Roman mythology.

Jupiter has no ground to land a spacecraft on. It is a giant ball of gas; like a cloud squeezed tight. It is the largest of the "gas giant" planets. The other "gas giant" planets are Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. Hydrogen and helium are the main components of Jupiter.

Even though Jupiter is the largest planet, it's 1,000 times smaller than the Sun. Interestingly enough, scientists believe Jupiter and its 16 known satellites probably formed as a miniature solar system; the planet was a large rotating ball of gas. A planetary nebula surrounded it and developed into a planet and its moons.

Jupiter's magnetic field, which extends to 10 times the planet's radius, is the strongest of any planet. It causes intense bursts of radio noise. Layers of dense clouds surround Jupiter, making it impossible to see the planet's surface from Earth; the planet's atmosphere is hundreds of miles deep. Jupiter probably has a rocky core with a mass that's 10 times greater than that of our planet. A mixture of liquid hydrogen and helium surrounds the planet's core. The enormous pressure of Jupiter's upper layers has squeezed the mixture into metallic form.

If you look at Jupiter through a telescope, it's highest clouds look like dark belts and bright zones that surround the planet. The clouds are probably made of frozen crystals of ammonia and methane. Even though Jupiter radiates almost two times as much heat as it gets from the Sun, it is a very cold planet. The temperature at the tops of its clouds is estimated be around -130 degrees Centigrade. Like Saturn, Jupiter has rings composed of tiny rocks and dust particles. However, Jupiter's ring system is narrow.

Look at Jupiter and you'll probably see a Giant Red Spot. Scientists think the spot is a hurricane that lasts hundreds of years. The spot is so big that it's large enough to cover three Earths.

Jupiter rotates on its axis faster than any other planet. Although a year on Jupiter would be equivalent to 11.9 years on our planet, its day is only 9.9 hours long. The planet's rapid rotation causes a noticeable bulge at its equator.

Jupiter's four largest moons were the first heavenly bodies in our solar system to be discovered using a telescope. They are called the Galilean moons because Galileo discovered them in 1610. They are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Io is covered with active volcanoes, while some of the plant's other moons are covered with ice.

Several spacecraft have been sent through space to study Jupiter. Pioneer 10 and 11 visited the planet in 1973 and 1974, and Voyagers 1 and 2 visited in 1979. In October 1989, the Galileo spacecraft started its trip to Jupiter. By 1995, the Galileo was close enough to Jupiter to release a probe into the planet's atmosphere. It takes approximately six years for a spacecraft launched from Earth to reach Jupiter.
